Many people are turning to astrology these days to help them understand and give some meaning to what they are experiencing. It is not “a tool of the devil” as some religions would have you believe but rather a beautiful example of the unity of all creation. Basically, astrology takes the facts of astronomy – the measurement and movements of the planets around the Earth and Sun and their relationship to each other – and then reads those facts symbolically.
Symbols carry deep meaning for us, even when we don’t recognize them consciously. That’s why our corporations took mythic names and symbols to represent their products. There is an ancient resonance between our unconscious and those symbols – for example Nike who was the goddess of victory. And now represents running shoes.
Symbolic language speaks to our souls – to that part of ourselves most connected to our Spirit.
All ancient cultures saw stories in the heavens, linking different star clusters to different myths. It’s amazing how similar those stories are all around the world. The clusters, or constellations, refer to the mythic forms the ancients projected onto the sky. There are some astrologers who work with those constellations, such as sidereal astrologers and eastern jotish astrologers.
Most Western astrology works with what we call the tropical zodiac, a zodiac that’s linked to the Earth and her seasons (from the point of view of the northern hemisphere). And so every year when the Sun comes over the Equator and starts to rise in the northern hemisphere, we say that is the sign of Aries, the sign of beginnings and new life. The sign of the uprushing Spirit of Spring. Aries.
When the Sun reaches it’s highest northern declination at the Tropic of Cancer, we celebrate Summer Solstice in the sign of Cancer, the nurturing Mother. As the Sun moves back south to the Equator, we arrive at Fall Equinox, Libra, sharing the harvest. The Sun travels south then until it reaches it’s lowest declination at the Tropic of Capricorn when the northern hemisphere celebrates Winter Solstice, December 21st. The rebirth of the light.
Astrology works with the seasons of Earth as well as with the heavenly energies of those seasons. It is a great gift to have our cosmic instructions written across the heavens. Your birth chart tells you where the planets were at the moment of your birth as seen from the Earth. It is your blueprint for life.
But it is only a blueprint. How you fill it in and decorate your life is totally up to you. Your astrological blueprint makes sense of the energies of life as embodied in you! It helps you to know that you don’t have to be all things to all people. You just have to be yourself.
An astrology reading can give you a new perspective on your life, helping you understand more clearly how you use your energies and how you might improve on how you use them. When we do astrological counseling, we use the astrology chart as a starting point to discuss how and why things are going on your life. Sometimes we even journey to the planetary ‘gods & goddesses’ and speak to them personally. We always come back with wise information.
Astrology is your personal treasure map of your Self. Astrology is a tool that can be used for your higher good. In times of chaos, giving your personal chaos a bit of structure is always a good thing.
I hope this gives you a better idea of what astrology is and how it can help you sort out your life. Thank you for your interest. Come back again for more blogs on astrology.
